Pascal
Pascal - Dansar (video) <-- new song but bad quality sound.
Unusual and brilliant. These are the two words which come to my mind when I think about Pascal. After a very Jesus and the Mary Chain first record called Förbi Fabriken, they released last year a more loud-Elvis Galgberget. It was in my best of 2008. You can buy them here and find my other posts about them there. This is one of my favourite Swedish band, for sure.
Planned for January 2010, their third album is quite awaited. You wanna scoop ? It might be called "Orkanen närmar sig". Manuela and Mimmi, the two girls of this trio, answered my questions. If they do not always agree with eachother, they seem to have a sharp point of view about what they want.
How would you describe your next record?
Manuela : Dark, rock n' roll, heavy.
Mimmi : More of the 80s than the others. It is more beautiful and not quite as agressive as Galgberget. But it is still kind of dark but not in a gothic sense. It is very hard to explain. You'll have to hear it.
Its name?
Manuela : No name right now, mabye "Orkanen närmar sig".
Mimmi : We were thinking of "Orkanen närmar sig" and that means "the hurricane is getting near" but nothing is decided yet.
Is it important for you to sing in Swedish?
Manuela : Yes, it's easy to express yourself in that way. Like how you fell. But we will try in English in the future.
Mimmi : Everytime we try to write and sing in English it just feels wrong. It is really hard to express yourself in a language that is not your native language. All those details such as our sometimes black sense of humour is then lost.
You quote Elvis in your songs, made a cover of "Tutti Frutti"... Elvis is a reference few bands actually do nowadays. What does he mean for you ?
Manuela : He's the King, he can make you happy. That's it. He started rock.
Mimmi : Personally Elvis does not mean that much to me - other than the fact that he died on a toilet and that sometimes you can be afraid to share his destiny - to die alone too soon on a toilet. Of course his music was wonderful as well. But I'm more of a synth 80s kind of person rather than rock n' roll from the 50s. That is more Manuela's thing.
I always thought your music would be just perfect for a David Lynch movie such as Twin Peaks. If you could do a soundtrack of a movie which director would you like to work with ?
Manuela : We all love Lynch! And I like Jarmusch and Kaurismäki as well.
Mimmi : I feel that if any director loves our music and wants to combine our art with his/hers that would be very flattering. But of course if David Lynch calls us and asks we would not say no. I think we all love his art.
The photos you're in, your teeshirts, your record covers do not seem to want to look "modern". Same thing with your music : there is no keyboard or electro like many rock 21st century do nowadays. Am I wrong? How would you like people to picture Pascal?
Manuela : A band who likes to play rock. And of course it's nice to look good when you play and in pictures. We like old stuff.
Mimmi : We are all interested in art in some ways. And of course our personal taste reflects on our albums and photographs but it is not a concious PR strategy to fake some kind of old school look. It is just what we like. Very few modern things are beautiful. I prefer Jugend ahead of Ikea and that is not so strange.
What kind of music do you listen to at home? Your fav Swedish bands?
Manuela : Everybody in the band like diffrent things, from synth, punk and rock. We don't have a favourite Swedish band... sorry.
Mimmi : My favourite Swedish band right now is Entombed.
What were you doing before to answer those questions?
Manuela : Preparing to go to bed!
Mimmi : I wish I could say that I did someting cool like "I stole a car and drove our in the desert and had sex with my boyfriend" but I was just doing the dishes.
